Louie LaChusa, Woodcarver and Artist

About Louie

Louie LaChusa is a Native American Indian from San Diego, California. He retired in 2018 and moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina where he found himself with plenty of free time to pursue his lifelong love of art. He started with his first love, photography, creating Native American Digital Art Prints. In 2020, he began dabbling in chainsaw wood carving, given the abundance of downed trees and available material on his property.

Wood Carvings

Louie begins each sculpted piece of wood with his chainsaw, before moving on to more precision woodcarving tools to craft the intricate details. He doesn’t try to replicate nature in the carvings he creates. Instead, he allows himself to be inspired by the wood. As a result, each wood sculpture is unique, with a personality and character of its own.

He has crafted everything from bears to Native American Indians, eagles, owls, dogs, horses, and even mailbox and holiday decor. His one-of-a-kind pieces of art are beautiful decorations, both indoors and outside in their natural environment.

He sells his artwork and carvings directly, and through the Carolina Mountain Artists Guild—of which he is a member—in downtown Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Woodcarving Care & Maintenance: When placing carvings outdoors, elevate the carving off the ground. All carvings are sealed with several coats of polyurethane. To keep your carving protected, I recommend coating with polyurethane 1-2x/year. Keep in mind, all wood cracks and these cracks add character to your custom piece of art.

Native American Digital Art Prints

In addition to wood carving, Louie also creates Native American Digital Art Prints. He begins with photographs that he’s taken, and then he digitally enhances and manipulates the images, turning them into vibrant and visually interesting abstract art. Each piece is beautifully printed on canvas and stretched over a wood frame.
